Bad Breath Remedies – What is Bad Breath and Its Causes

Before we look at some bad breath remedies we can use to cure bad breath, we need to understand a bit more about bad breath and its causes. More than 60% of Americans suffer from bad breath, with more than 40 millions having chronic bad breath condition. So it is really important that we know how to combat bad breath.

Bad breath though unpleasant has many names such as Halitosis, Mauvaise Haleine in French, breath odor or lion’s breath. It is not the kind of condition everyone can live with, and can be a huge embarrassment especially if you have to meet many people daily. The worst part is some of us may not even be aware that we have bad breath. But when we do, we should seriously look at the bad breath remedies we can use conveniently.

The moist and warm environment within our mouth is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria that is largely responsible for bad breath. Such bacteria produces volatile sulphur compounds VCS, the main culprit behind bad breath. Though our morning breath stinks, it is not bad breath. What happens is that overnight, our saliva dries up and since the decayed foods are not washed away, bacteria feed on them and emit odorous gases. That explains for the unpleasant smell.

Bad Breath Causes

1. Diet

What we eat will affect our breath when they are digested. Avoid garlic, onions and peppers. These foods produce small odor molecules which enter our lungs causing bad breath when we exhale.

2. Poor Dental Hygiene

We need to brush and floss our teeth daily. If we fail to do so, remaining morsels of food get stuck in the cavities of our teeth and rot, emitting bad odor. Dentures that are unclean can also cause bad breath due to the presence of rotting food, and retention of the odorous compounds.

3. Dry Mouth Condition

Unlike morning breath which is normal for everyone, some people are afflicted with dry mouth condition. The deficiency in saliva flow is caused by usage of medications, problems with the salivary glands or sinusitis. Constant nose blockages from sinusitis would force one to breath through the mouth and leads to dryness.

4. Smoking

Smoking will cause bad breath because of the tobacco content.

5. Illnesses and Diseases

Illnesses and diseases such as lung infection, lung disease, chronic sinusitis, liver disease, diabetes, kidney diseases can lead to bad breath.

In our next post, we will look at some ways to keep bad breath at bay and effective bad breath remedies. We will also learn how longtime sufferers of bad breath and gum disease successfully overcame both conditions using a scientifically proven bad breath remedy system.

True, we should identify the causes first before we look at the remedies. after all, prevention is better than cure. How else can we prevent it if we do not know the cause?
